when bad ceilings happen to good people

No, I'm not trying to create an imitation Duchamp. That bucket's on my toilet for a reason. Click on that picture. Look at the top of the picture. Look close. See that drop of water, right at the very top?

That's what started falling from my ceiling at about 2:00 this morning. And how did I find out? Because I was using the toilet at the time!

Anyone who thinks city life is glamorous, read on...

See, I had a leaky ceiling a few weeks ago -- water started coming in on two of my bathroom walls, which bubbled the paint and cracked one wall on its opposite side, in my bedroom. Another spot had the water going alongside and under my light switch. Not good. I called the super, he checked the apartment above me and found a leak the tenants didn't bother to tell him about.

The leak was fixed, my walls dried out, and I've been meaning to make an appointment with him to get my walls scraped and repainted. I've been noticing a moldy smell in my bathroom as of late, but figured it was behind the wall -- maybe it hadn't dried all the way through.

Well, I'm glad I waited, as now my super needs to do not only the walls, but also the ceiling. My super couldn't find another leak upstairs, so he thinks this is water that was simply trapped in the walls -- when he came into my apartment, he had to go up and through my ceiling to let the water drain out. Which it did -- it poured out, in fact.

I'm still not totally certain that this is the end of the problem. There's just no way that much water sat in the walls for three weeks. Also, my toilet's also taken to flushing by itself. My super didn't think this was a big deal, but I've been told that this will happen if there's a change in water pressure. And what could change water pressure? A leaky pipe.

: sigh :

For extra glamour points, how's this for a fun realization? Super took a look at the water in the bucket, and pointed out, "Hey, it's clear -- so at least it's not coming directly from the upstairs toilet."

Remember that this water dripped on my head earlier this morning.

All together now, as the realization of What Could Have Been hits us all: Ewwwwwwwww!

Uh...hi? I know I haven't blogged in almost a month -- things here at UltraMega HQ have been a little hectic and crazy.

I did take some time to get in some kultcha -- last weekend, I went to Warm Up over at P.S. 1, in Long Island City. P.S. 1 is a musum housed in an old public school building -- every summer, they have events in the schoolyard on Saturdays. This summer they have DJs playing on Saturday nights -- and a huge bamboo canopy was put up to boot, with four zones: dry, pool, mist, and rainforest. Quite cool. If you're in the area, the last night is September 4 -- it's a lot of fun, even if DJs and dancing aren't your thing.
